April 2017

April was a month of bugs and blossom, although it wasn't all spring sunshine. We hadn't completely shook off winter, and frost returned for a few days towards the end of the month. Overall though, April was really the month of the Tulip.

Spring finally sprung in March, and this was reflected by a multitude of floral activity. There were the usual Daffodils, Crocus, Snowdrops and the beginnings of the Tulips, as well as the more unusual sightings of Hepatica and Virginia Stock. The bugs also made their return!

Signs of spring were starting to show in February, and the weekly articles reflected that with images of winter blossom coming to an end, crocuses popping up, and heavenly hellebores making an appearance.

October arrived and along with it so did autumn. The weather turned cooler, and insect life started to wane. However, there were still a few strays to photograph, including a Plume Moth and a Common Wasp. October also saw the arrival of the Nerines, a firm favourite of mine, and there were plenty of other photo opportunities before the weather turned too cold.

September saw summer turn into autumn, but in general, the weather stayed warm and fine for the most part, after the first week. This meant raindrops for one week, followed by autumn flowers, house plants and an early autumn glimpse of a hoverfly visiting a pretty poppy.

The continuing beautiful weather this month meant that insects were once again the main focus of photography. There were butterflies, bumblebees, hoverflies and dragonflies. I was even inspired to write a tutorial on how to shoot insects.

After the wet weather of June, we experienced a heatwave in July - for the most part. This led to lots of insect activity to capture. However, we did have one week that returned us to winter like temperatures, and meant a week of raindrop photography, and playing with gooseberries!

June saw the start of British Summertime, although to look at the weather you'd never know it. It was the wettest June on record, but in spite of this, there were interesting insects, exotic flowers, and yawning cats to see.

Spring was in full swing in May, and with temperatures mostly rising, the rain retreating, the articles contained lots of images of springtime flowers, the return of the insects to the garden, and lots of birds.

Spring started to come alive in April, and the articles covered lots of springtime flowers, especially tulips and weeds. Robins were spotted feeding each other, and how important it is to provide nourishment for the early insects was discussed.
